You'll be the judge: Lord Roxton's Stubble and his Red Shirt

In March 2003 we launched not only the Fashion Plateau itself, but also the column You'll be the judge!, which invites all those interested in Plateau Fashion to voice their opinion on important style matters.
We kicked it off with two questions regarding Lord John Roxton. Read the varied opinions and feel free to join the discussion. The Fashion Plateau is happy to publish new opinions, even though March 2003 is long gone. An opinion about Lord Roxton is always in season after all.

Roxton's stubble

Wouldn't Marguerite rather kiss a clean-shaven man?

Even those people who criticize Lord John Roxton for his slightly obsessive relationship with firearms freely admit that he possesses a certain ruggedness and charm that separates him from many lesser members of the male species. His lack of pretentiousness and snobbery distinguishes him from his aristocratic countrymen and makes him a most pleasant companion in the Treehouse. He does not seem to spend much time on wardrobe and style matters, relying on a staple of beige pants, pastel colored shirts with or without stripes and his beloved boots. Two important questions cry out for your opinion.

Should Lord Roxton shave more often?

While in the first year of the expedition Lord Roxton occasionally appeared clean-shaven, he has more and more neglected a regular shaving routine and in the last year we have only seen him on days when he had a definite stubble on his manly chin and cheeks. This has a certain carefree appeal, but what about the needs of his lady love? Marguerite's lovely skin might be negatively affected by rough, scratchy encounters with coarse facial hair, especially now that their relationship has definitely entered the "lotsakissin'goin'on" phase. What's your opinion?

A matter of intense discussion - The red shirt
roxtonredshirtweb.jpg
Is it red? Is it pink? Is it hideous? Is it cool? Confusion reigns in this matter...

Do you like the red shirt?

The red-striped shirt has been criticized many times by board members, the color was deemed unsuitable for a handsome man like Roxton and the theft of said shirt at the mud pit was met with much glee. Of course the shirt reappeared in our last adventure with the explorers and it looks like Lord Roxton has brought more than one of these shirts to the Plateau.
We actually like the shirt, we find the color fresh and well-suited to his tanned skin and dark hair. It also has a nice cut and is always worn with an extra button unbuttoned. Yay or nay to the red shirt?

Beckers says:
Shirt: His red striped shirt never really bothered me. I do prefer Roxton's light and dark blue (denim type) shirts but I can take or leave the red-striped. Actually, that white T-shirt has the most appeal for this fan. <g> But truly, any shirt - as long as he is in it - works for me.
Shave: I think now that Lord Roxton has a serious romantic  relationship going on, it might be a bit more polite to shave just a tad closer. A bit of stubble on the chin isn't bad - gives him that manly man look - but when Roxton lets it grow out on his lower cheeks and jawline - ouch! Partake in a little kissage and we're talking a major stubble burn here. And we just know how Marguerite, the love of his life, will react if she is forced to endure a three day rash as a result. To sum up, if John Roxton shaves just the tiniest bit closer ... it'll do wonders for his love life. I'm all for that.
Eva says:
1.  Clean Shaven or Two-Day Stubble?  Personally, I love the bristly feeling of a man who hasn't shaved in a couple of days.  And, since we know the man has 'soft lips', who's to say that the stubble isn't as soft as peach fuzz.
2.  Red-Striped Shirt or Not?
I have always maintained this is a marvelous color for Lord Roxton.  It represents a passion for life, that we all know this man possesses.  Besides, doesn't Marguerite favor the color red in her own fashion statement?  I vote...keep the red-striped shirt.
Mindy says:
I love the facial hair, that rugged look suits him fine (he looked great when he was smoking too)!
The red shirt must come off...yes in deedy!

The Fashion Plateau wonders: the shirt must come off... Mindy, are you implying something here? ;-)

Dee says:
Keep the stubble!  But then, I'm a sucker for any facial hair.  If Marguerite is concerned about her sensitive skin, she can always send him my way.  I know! I know!  I'm at the back of a very, very, long line for that one.
I haven't seen any of the eps with the red-striped shirt yet.  Going only by what I can tell from the picture, I vote to keep the shirt.  Roxton in any shirt, or no shirt for that matter, is just fine by me.
AgentSteph says:
Should Roxton shave more often?  OH NO!  Maybe once in awhile just to suprise Marguerite, but too bad for her...... it looks too good to do away with!
The RED shirt STAYS!  I agree with all those who say it accents the well-tanned complexion and my oh my does he wear it well!  <THUD>
Jaxgirl says:
I think Roxton should not shave too often, he looks great with a little stubble, and  I really don't think it would matter, Marguerite would kiss him no matter what.
That striped shirt can go to the ape men because it sure doesn't look good on Roxton.
katybelle says:
Roxton's stubble: I like it.  I think it makes him look sexy.  And let's face it, how close a shave is he going to get on the plateau?  I think Margurite likes it too.
As for the red shirt, I prefer Roxton in blue.
Ariadne says:
There is a difference between ‘seeing’ and ‘feeling’, and while I personally prefer the sight of Roxton with the stubble, he is only in my sights, so to speak, and not within my touch.  Certainly, I would not want nicks and cuts to mar his skin.  But I think the final answer on this question should come from Marguerite herself.
The red shirt does little for him, except as a change from the blues and taupes he usually wears.  It would look much better on Marguerite, who has more intensive colouring and consequently does better in bright colours, especially red.  Maybe she could convince him that her wardrobe has been sadly depleted from being used to bind up all the spear stabs and various wounds that the explorers seem to get, and that he should donate the shirt to her.  Failing that, a little judicious use of bleach (either Challenger’s home made variety or from the hardware store at the Zanga mall) may tone down the colour so that it is more suitable to his complexion...

Loc190 says:
Shave: I can't believe I'm going to say this - but we must not let fashion get in the way of practicality!  In the middle of the jungle it is not always possible to find the time to shave - what with chores to be done and evil fiends to be avoided!  Having said that, however, this is one of those happy occasions where style and functionality collide!  I must personally say he looks rather good either way!  As for Marguerite well she'll just have to learn to take the rough with the smooth!
Shirt: I feel criticism levelled at Lord Roxton's shirt is somewhat unfair!  Is it red or is it pink?  I lean towards it being red with the white stripes combinig to give an overall pink effect.  For a lesser man (mentioning no names!) this may be a fashion faux pas but for someone as manly as our handsome hunter it is a bold and innovative fashion statement!
Mistycara says:
I think Roxton's unshaven look is very sexy.  If it's possible it makes him look even more ruggedly handsome.  I'd be willing to risk the razor burn.
As for the red shirt I think it is very flattering on him. The colour looks very good with his tan and his lovely dark hair.
LMR says:
Shirt: I personally think that Lord Roxton looks good in every situation, he could wear a potato sack, and would still be the most handsome Lord I ever saw.
Shave: Hmm.. Yes, I think he should shave more often. When somebody has soft lips, he should have soft cheeks too! ;)
SunKrux says:
I really see no dilemma so far as that red/white striped shirt is concerned.  I mean...look at Marguerite's face in the picture...clearly she is not happy that Lord Roxton is still wearing that shirt!  I have a feeling that she's been trying to get rid of that shirt for quite some time now.  And why not...it really does nothing for the man.  He looks more handsome in blue or white.   However, I have a feeling that it is most likely his favorite shirt.  Rarely have we seen the back of this shirt.  I bet it has holes galore in it.  I have a feeling that Marguerite is sick and tired of trying to mend all those holes. My vote on the shirt...Marguerite should cut it up for rags!
To shave or not to shave that is the question. Personally it would all depend on just how rough Lord Roxton's stubble is.  If it's nice and soft...I say keep it.  If it's coarse, I'm sure Miss Krux will have no qualms about telling him to shave.  I do not see her allowing his stubble to mar her perfect skin.  A coarse stubble or beard would leave marks similar to a rash on her.  That just wouldn't do, not for Marguerite Krux who prefers, it seems, to keep their relationship out of the lime light.

The Fashion Plateau thanks all the fashion experts who have come forward with their opinions. Keep them coming!
